Today we went out to Kearney Park to see the Civil War Revisited. It's a re-enactment of a battle of the Civil War. They also have exhibits with period crafts and trades of the day, as well as different famous people from the day. You can walk around and talk to them. Most of them are in character for as long as they are with the public and they know their character, so you feel like you are talking to the real person.
This is Walt Whitman...poet
Harriet Tubman is in the brown and Sojourner Truth on the left. This group also sang different Negro Spirituals
acapella. They were really good. Some of the songs they sang are songs I sang during my high school and college days. A lot of the spirituals have been passed down and arranged for choirs...they are some of my favorites to sing. (A little choir trivia there)
She is a modern day basket weaver...and I thought that basket weaving was just a joke for easy college classes! What she was doing was no joke, quite an art.
She was sewing on a 1909 sewing machine, but the same kind of the Civil War. It worked great and she said it has never had a part replaced! It that amazing or what?
The gals were so sweet. They talked with us for quite a while. The one on the left is making a rag rug and the one on the right is making thread out of lamb's wool. I love their costumes! After seeing all these
ladies, I got inspired to get out my machine and start sewing again.
Jen and Melissa showing off a hand made chair
Jen and her hair. I think she looks like a feather duster....like the one from Beauty and the Beast.
We went to the re-enactment because
Nacoya and her friend, who is also Melissa's cousin, Heather are both in U.S. History and got extra credit for going and interviewing four people. Here they are listening to Abe Lincoln. This guy does a lot of gigs as Mr. Lincoln and knows so much history....he is really interesting to listen to.
Doesn't he look like the real Mr. Lincoln?
Heather, Jenna, Melissa, Olivia (
Nacoya's other friend) and
Nacoya ready to watch the battle.
Olivia and
Nacoya Dave and the ear plugs he packed for all of us. We were so glad he did...the canons are like a sonic boom, just at close range!
The battle...
